THE PRIMEIROS TRAÇOS INSTITUTE OF ART, EDUCATION
AND CULTURE.

1.MISSION
The Primeiros Traços Institute of Art, Education and Culture - founded in June 3, 2003, is an civil non profit associacion, of philantropic nature, of social and cultural assistance which attends socially with no prejudice of etny, gender, religion belief, sexual or politic orientation as like deficients on their activities and social objectives or on their components on their associative components. The Primeiros Traços Institute has as an objective to produce e spread informations, to capacitate children and teenagers on the educational, cultural and artistic areas through actions and classes which turn them professionals, artistic managements, research incentives, to sell products and services for the sole purpuse to maintain those actions developed by the institution, bringing benefits for those helped by the project.

1.1 EDUCACIONAL ACTION
The institute priorizes exchange of experiences between professional on the Ilustracion and comunicacional areas, improving methodologies for the formation of the citizen. Aiming, with this thought, to discover talents for later educacional action with those cartoonists and designers, turning them on Art Directors and introduce them in the editorial market. They will, that way, be multiplicators acting in their communities. Among the main objectives, is to spread on a democratic way, the practice of ECA - Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (Chlindren and Teenagers Statute), delivering quality information to all communities.

1.2 ARTISTIC ACTION
The Primeiros Traços Institute aims to develop the creative potential, amplify artistic habilities, promote access to new tecnologies for the community and to incentivate the expression of the diversity through experimental research through artistic languages (literature, advertisement, draws in comic books, graphic arts, etc). This action develops the students artistically on their graphic aptitudes for the editorial market. They will be learning to use those work tools and applying theis habilities on the various areas of social communication (production of children's books, comic books, illustrated educative campaigns, graphic projects, etc).

1.3 SOCIAL ACTION
The capacitation centers which exists on the Primeiros Traços Institure are destined for the children and teenagers of communities of low Human Development Index and lives on situation of risks.
To integrate, socialize and fight social and digital exclusion in those communities and, most of all, to offer jobs opportunities on the editorial market are the practical objectivies of the Primeiros Traços Institure. For thar, the Institute looks for partnerships with firms (privates, governamentals, publishers, newspapers, etc.) aiming for the introduction of the students of the project for trainee programs on their communication areas.


2 - TRAJECTORY

The Primeiros Traços Institute of Art, Education and Culture, legally formed on 2003, was born with the "Primeiros Traços Project", an iniciative presented 15 years ago, at Rio de Janeiro, seeking to benefit children and teenagers. An art-educacional project never before seen which promoted actions side by side with their communities, through implementation of actions aiming social communication. Their first four years were purely experimentals. The crescent interest for the project made it to expando to attend poor children and teenagers. Those young people which came from different life situations, got the chance of showing their abilities, proving for everybody they were born artists. Over 2500 children have already passed by the project. The positive and concrete response for the inicial proposal of the project, reafirming the rights to dignity, respect and education was the creation of the "Fala Criança" (Speak, Child) journal. An space for reflexion and to express their thoughs produced by children and teenagers of public schools. The journal, which is on its 14th edition, publishes developments of comic strips and illustrations, interviews with personalities, reflexions about the enviroment, riths and behaviors, among others themes always introducing children's thoughs about them.

3 - RECOGNIZEMENTS
Those recognizements legitimates the importance of this work that, for the past two years, contributes with actions that seeks to give opportunities and improvements to the unfavoured children and teenagers on the way that that we occupy their time with social and educational activities. Those activities are productive and stimulates the creativity and knowledge, inserting them in a social context as citizens.


3.1 UNESCO'S Official Stamp
The Primeiros Traços Institute's Fala Criança journal recieved in 2004 the title Magister in Educative Excelency by Ibero-American Council. An important international recognizement for the projects of coletive efforts on the path of educative excelency in Latin America. It has, too, conquered the UNESCO - United Nations - Official Stamp for Education, Science and Culture.

3.2 Electronic Media
The Fala Criança was a reference for three years in a row in Media for the childhood World Week, covered by BAND TV and REDE BRASIL Educational TV.

3.3 Print Media
Several reports published by the principal vehicles: O Dia Newspaper, O Globo Newspaper, Jornal do Brasil.

3.4 Online Media
The Fala Criança Journal is inserted on several sites aiming social and cultural actions: Viva Favela (Viva Rio), Globo Online, Mídia Educação Magazine (TVE).


4 - DEVELOPED PROJECTS

4.1 Fala Criança Journal

The Fala Criança Journal seeks to minimize the reality of the children and teenagers that, to avoid emotinal problems, family violence and lack of educacional perspectives, live susceptible to inactivity, consuming drugs and, consequently, end up victims on confronts between the police and drug dealers.
Following the tendency that has been happening on developed countries, it is needed the crescent participation of several institutions (public or private) and social segments. It is possible to build a better country seeking to prevention on all ife's sectors, turning possible to reduce irresponsible errors and dangerous, disastreous and irreversibles consequences of a society that generates misery.
That way, the Fala Criança Journal is one more development of this constructivist line of though, a result of dedication of Primeiros Traços Institute seeking to improve the formos of social inclusion and participation on our society.
Within two years of activities, the Fala Criança Journal does an important work, spreading ideas, defending children's rights, publishing quality information, giving opportunitiess to young talents, publishing their comic strips and illustrations of those artists formed by the Primeiros Traços Institute. Over than 200 illustrations published, launching in the market future cartoonist and graphic artists.


Publishments: bimensal - 14 editions in two years.
Format: tabloid with 12 pages
Distribution: Rio de Janeiro's Secretary of Educatution (Schools, Libraries, Formation Centers, ONGs, Institutes, Cultural Centers, etc).
Partners: Rio de Janeiro City Hall - Cultural Secretary; CEFET/RIO; Unesco; Mídia Educação Magazine (TV E), Caixa Econômica Federal (on 12nd edition/2004).
Children who participated are from: Maria da Graça and Tijuca Districts, Rio de Janeiro's North Zone.


4.2 Children Rights Campaign

Developed project in 2002 to spread the Children's Statute. The Campaign lasted one year in the Public network of schools, Rio de Janeiro's Subway stations and Feira da Providência (Providência Fair). It published distinct banners advertising articles of the Statute: Education, Equal rights, Respect, Dignity and Social Justice. The banners portraited children with their faces painted with the colors of Brazil's National Flag.


4.3 Comic Book Festival

Exposition of comic books Illustrators in the Telephone Museum in 1995.
The exposition united the results of the first Comic Book workshop of the city of Rio de Janeiro created by the Primeiros Traços Institute in the Tijuca Tennis Club, Rio de Janeiro's North Zone. The workshop was destined for children and teenagers of several social classes of Tijuca district.
The exposition was sponsored by PEPSI CO., receiving one page coverage in O Globo Newspaper.

Anual Festival of Comic Book in Tijuca Tennis Club - 1997 to 2003
The event united anually all the production of Primeiros Traços Workshop. It was exposed works of the students in the art gallery of Tijuca Tennis Club. Simultaneously, RPG contests, anime (japanese animation) exhibitions, publishments of fanzines, comic book library and prize distributions were held.
The objective was promote meetings between younglings of several social classes, seeking cultural exchange.


4.4 Communitary Comic book Workshop - 2002
An implanted project in Thereza de Jesus Shelter, sponsored by Children and Teenagers Funds, resources from SMDS - Secretaria de Municipal do Desenvolvimento Social (City Social Development Secretary). The objective was to develop artistic and critic capacity, creating incentives for reading to children and teenagers from poor communities in Tijuca District. The project included: introduction to computers, Internet research, comic book techniques, writing, etc. This action motivated the creation of Fala Criança Journal.

1st New Talents Exposition - 2004
The project was sponsored by CAIXA ECONÔMICA and was held in CEFET/RJ, where 50 digitally colored comic strips developed by children and teenagers were exposed. The project exhibited animated cartoons, comic book library.
